The Concept
DirtGlue Enterprises’ TerraDry™ is an aqueous solution based on organo-silane formulation. It is used to impart hydrophobicity and water repellency on cohesive and inferior in-situ soil, and to condition the poor quality soil to a full-function gravel substitute. DirtGlue Enterprises’ TerraDry™ imparts total water repellency on conditioned, cohesive gravel. Capillary water uptake is thus prevented, resulting in permanent load-bearing strength, stability as well as frost resistance.
The Application
The "mixed-in-place" process for conferring water repellency on in-situ soil
Repair to the soil and subsoil of existing unpaved and paved roads where the substructure is too weak or insufficiently dimensioned
Subgrade stabilization increasing load bearing capacity for asphalt roads or special toppings, such as chip seal, DirtGlue polymer/aggregate, cobblestones and interlocked paving stones, paver bricks, etc.,
The Process
Spray inject properly diluted TerraDry™ into the soil in the mixing chamber as the insitu soil is pulverized using standard road construction and soil stabilization equipment. A baseline recommendation is 11/2 gallon TerraDry™ per cu yd of soil (1.5 L/M3). The ideal quantity must be determined in preliminary tests. In a single operation, the pulvimixer rips the roadbed open breaks up large stones and pieces of road topping, and mixes TerraDry™. Thoroughly mixed, homogeneous and well-graded roadbed material is obtained, which can be leveled and compacted immediately. The topping can be applied directly after compaction, without any need to wait for curing. As an option on low traffic roads the surface can be left unpaved or may be treated with DirtGlue Enterprises’ DustLess organic fluid to eliminate dust without paving
Storage stability
DirtGlue Enterprises’ TerraDry™ should be stored in steel or plastic drums or in plastic or glass containers. Aluminum or galvanized or lacquered containers are not suitable. In the sealed container, TerraDry™ has a shelf life of at least 12 months. Store at -4°F (–20°C) or higher. If crystals form due to low storage temperatures, these will redissolve when the product is allowed to warm up. The product must then be stirred thoroughly. TerraDry™ that has been diluted should be stored at a temperature above 32°F (0°C). When working with soil treated with DirtGlue Enterprises’ TerraDry™, it is essential to observe the same rules that apply to earthwork and road construction. Problem-free water runoff must be ensured by means of cambering or gradients, and where roads traverse water-bearing hillsides, drainage must be provided along the course of the road. Work is not possible when temperatures are below freezing, and soil cannot be conditioned when it is raining. In the event of unexpected rain, work must be stopped immediately; the soil covered or pressed down and, if necessary, then allowed to dry again. Due to its low strength, soil with high organic matter content is not suitable as roadbed material.
Safety Instructions / Safe Handling
DirtGlue Enterprises’ TerraDry™ is strongly alkaline and corrosive, both as supplied and in its diluted form. Goggles should always be worn when handling the product. Any splashes on the skin should be washed off with plenty of water. If any of the product gets into the eyes, rinse them immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice (caustic burns!). Clothing wetted with DirtGlue Enterprises’ TerraDry™ must be taken off immediately. See MSDS for more details on health and safety
